What the Itaú tech interview is like

Itaú Unibanco is Brazil's largest private bank and, according to its annual report as cited by the press, has more than 17,000 people in technology. It does not publish the stages of its process for tech roles, but candidates describe a fairly short path: HR, a technical interview with the manager and someone from the team, and a final conversation with leadership. Culture weighs a lot, and the technical part is more about cases from your stack than about algorithms.

What Itaú is and who it hires in tech

According to its careers site, Itaú has more than 90,000 people. According to its 2025 integrated annual report, as cited in the press, more than 17,000 work in technology, and according to Bloomberg Línea more than 350 work only on generative AI.

Its technology page describes squads organised as a "tríade" of digital careers and mentions the Itaú Data Meetup, Semana de Produtos and the Itaú Tech blog on Medium. Entry programs are the Trainee program (up to 18 months, with a Produtos Digitais track), corporate internships (6 hours a day, open all year), summer internships and the Programa Acadêmicos (90 days, for master's and PhD students).

The stages, in order

Itaú does not publish a list of stages for tech roles. Its culture page only says that "o match com a nossa cultura é muito importante" (the match with our culture is very important). What candidates report:

  • A conversation with HR or management about the company and the culture.
  • A technical interview with the manager and a developer or specialist. One engineering candidate describes it as about 40 minutes.
  • A final conversation with leadership or the manager.
  • For Senior Software Engineer at Itaú BBA and Rede, one candidate reports 4 stages: HR first, then the manager and a specialist on the technologies you know.
  • For a junior developer role, one candidate reports an in-person day with a technical challenge, a discussion of it, presentations to managers and unit-testing exercises.

Internships, according to Forbes

For the 2026 corporate internships, Forbes Brasil describes this path:

  • Registration.
  • Logical reasoning test.
  • Assessment with the recruiting team.
  • Interview with leadership.
  • Wholesale business areas add an English test.

What each stage tests

  • HR and culture: whether you fit the "cultura itubers". Its official values in English include "We put the client first", "We have each other's back", "We treasure diversity and inclusion" and "We are driven by results".
  • Technical: what you use day to day. One mid-level developer says they were asked which AWS services they had used; another says the first conversation was with the tech lead, with no coderpad.
  • Cases: one candidate describes a technical case based on the team's stack; in a 2024 engineering internship, a logic case where the reasoning counted more than the exact answer.
  • Leadership: how you work and whether you fit the team.

Typical technical topics

Based on candidate reports:

  • AWS: which services you used and why.
  • Distributed systems architecture.
  • A technical case with the stack you would use on the team.
  • Unit tests, for junior roles.
  • Data science: a timed test of up to 3 hours on regression, classification and clustering.

Which language the interview is in

The technology page and the job posts are in Portuguese and do not ask for English. Candidates report that English depends on the team or area: one intern says the interviewers focused on their spoken and written English. For internships, Forbes mentions an English test only in the wholesale business areas. Prepare in Portuguese and ask whether your team will have an English part.

Tips

  • Prepare AWS and distributed architecture in depth: they come up most in the reports.
  • Expect a case built on your stack rather than a LeetCode problem, and practise explaining your decisions out loud.
  • Bring examples that show the itubers values, especially client focus and teamwork.
  • Be patient: several candidates complain about slow processes and missing feedback.
