What the PicPay interview is like
PicPay is one of Brazil's largest digital banks, and more than half of its people work in technology and product. It does not publish its interview stages, but candidates describe a fairly stable sequence: an HR conversation, a demanding technical interview on Java and system design, and a culture conversation where PicPay checks its seven values.

What PicPay does and who it hires
PicPay is a payments app and digital bank founded in Vitória (Espírito Santo) in 2012, headquartered in São Paulo with an office in Vitória. It listed on Nasdaq in January 2026.
According to its annual report to the SEC (20-F), on 31 December 2025 it had 4,629 employees, 2,712 of them in Technology and Product Development: data, technology, devOps, product and design. That is why most of its openings are technical.
The stages, in order
PicPay does not publish an official list of stages. According to a 2024 press report, beyond requirements and experience, the process assesses the candidate's cultural fit against its values. The rest comes from candidate reports, and the order varies between teams:
- HR conversation: your experience, your expectations and your fit with the role.
- Interview with the hiring manager: your background and how you work.
- Technical interview: Java questions, live coding with screen sharing and system design, often with two or three developers. Some candidates report a take-home challenge with a one-week deadline before it.
- Final behavioural or culture conversation with managers and HR. One candidate describes a longer chain: HR, direct manager, technical with the principals, senior manager, VP (optional) and culture.
What each stage tests
- HR and manager: experience, motivation and whether your profile fits the team.
- Technical: real command of the language (mostly Java) and the ability to design systems that handle volume and slow dependencies.
- Take-home (when there is one): code quality, reviewed with you afterwards.
- Culture: the seven values PicPay uses to assess fit: Atitude de Dono (ownership), Determinação, Disciplina, Simplicidade, Franqueza (candour), Humildade and Disponibilidade.
Typical technical topics
What candidates report, paraphrased:
- Java fundamentals: inheritance, polymorphism, collections such as Map, exceptions and the garbage collector.
- Object-oriented design, SOLID, design patterns, SQL versus NoSQL, and Kafka.
- Unit tests and TDD.
- Payments and credit system design: one candidate describes designing a credit-analysis service at about 2,000 transactions per second that depends on a Central Bank service limited to about 1,500, in other words resilience and rate limiting.
- In recent rounds, generative AI topics: tokens, RAG, agents and MCP.
Which language the interview is in
Candidate reviews are written in Portuguese and none mentions an English round. PicPay does not publish the language of its interviews, so for roles in Brazil expect a process in Portuguese; if the post asks for English, confirm with the recruiter.
Tips
- Review Java in depth, not just the framework: the garbage collector, collections, exceptions and object orientation come up again and again.
- Prepare a system design case with an external capacity limit: how you protect your service when a dependency handles less traffic than you do.
- Have one example for each of the seven values; cultural fit is assessed explicitly.
- Block out time: candidates report technical sessions of one to two hours and sometimes a one-week take-home.
