What the Datadog Paris interview is like

Datadog, the New York-based monitoring and observability platform, runs one of its most established engineering hubs in Paris. Its official process is short to describe but demanding: coding and design interviews, at least one step in person and written rules on AI use. The work happens in English, and Datadog itself says French is not required.

What Datadog does and what it does in Paris

Datadog sells a SaaS monitoring and observability platform. It opened its Paris R&D lab in October 2015, and a current post calls the office one of its most established engineering hubs, with director roles managing 50 to 60 engineers.

The company describes itself as a hybrid workplace. Some sales roles require French, but in engineering the working language is English.

The stages, in order

Datadog lists these stages, common to all roles, on its candidate-experience page:

  • Initial screen: by phone or Zoom, with the recruiter, the hiring manager or both.
  • Face-to-face interviews: possibly several rounds or panels, and at least one step is expected in person. Virtual ones run on Zoom.
  • Take-home project: some roles only.
  • Executive interview: some roles only.
  • Selection and offer, followed by a survey about your interview experience.

What candidates and outside guides report

Datadog does not detail its engineering rounds. The interviewing.io guide, which says it is based on conversations with Datadog engineers, describes a recruiter call of about 30 minutes, a technical screen of about 1 hour with two questions in CoderPad, and an onsite of about 4 hours: coding, a second coding round below Staff, system design and a behavioural interview with a manager or director. A hiring committee and team matching follow. According to that guide, the whole process takes about 6 weeks.

Paris candidates report a recruiter screen, a coding round and a second round that mixes coding, system design and a discussion of a past project. At the end, managers from several teams present their projects and you pick the one you prefer. One candidate puts the process at around a month.

What each stage tests

  • Coding: practical problems rather than puzzles, according to interviewing.io. Paris candidates mention writing a BufferedFile class and a sliding-window problem.
  • System design: interviewing.io says it is narrower than at other companies and is used to set your level. One Paris candidate reports designing a system similar to r/place.
  • Behaviour and values: according to candidates, built around a past project where you had major impact.
  • Take-homes and presentations: the official guide warns that you will defend your work live.

Typical technical topics and AI rules

Datadog's official AI guidelines (updated 13 May 2026) say that, unless explicitly stated otherwise, you should not use AI tools during live coding interviews or technical assessments. For certain roles it runs AI-assisted coding interviews where AI use is allowed and expected; you are told in advance. Misusing AI or not disclosing it can get you disqualified.

  • Medium-level coding problems in CoderPad (per interviewing.io and candidates).
  • Files, buffers and data structures applied to real cases.
  • Designing distributed systems at scale.
  • A past project explained in depth: decisions, problems and result.

Which language the interview is in

An official director post in Paris asks you to be comfortable operating in English in a cross-Atlantic organisation and adds that French is not required. Intern and early-career posts ask for your CV in English. Datadog does not publish the interview language, but the sensible plan is to prepare in English and confirm it with the recruiter.

Tips

  • Practise medium-level coding problems and go through whatever material the recruiter sends.
  • Take system design seriously: according to interviewing.io, it sets your level.
  • Prepare one project with real impact to discuss in depth in the values round.
  • Do not use AI in live coding unless told to, and plan for the in-person step.
  • If you have deadlines from other offers, tell the recruiter: the official page asks you to.
